A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....

We used to race 24 hour races....

Generally we used to have some sort of vague theme going.

The white overalls rocked....still have em somewhere....for more see naegears.

We were young and our bodies could take the punishment: beers every lap, an almost entirely meat based diet...and a week of recovery.....

Its the 24 solo champs this weekend....friends grant3, jac, Mr Makin and various others are racing. I grew tired of zipping around in tiny circles a few years ago, but part of me wishes i was there....

Heres the 'trailer'....i'll be interested to see how they get on. Newcastleton isnt the uk-typical farmers field course...

Yep. Conditions at Newcastleton this weekend were very similar to that weekend many moons ago - ie far too hot for anything more physical than finding a nice river or loch to muck about in, followed by a bbq and a snooze in the shade...

Winning geezer Matt Page did 22 laps, with 580m of climbing [and 7Stanes descending] per lap. I'll leave you to do the mathematical worky outy stuff, but that is a *lot*.

An event and course more than worthy of the National championship status.

i've checked the with the TSPC archivist and 2002 RBMMwas overcast and coolish.

the super-hot 24 hour race was Sleepless the following year when temps were over 30C the first day and downpours the next. 2003=pyjamas.

more 24 stuff going up now.

It wasn't until the 5th year, but I learned that 24hr events aren't any fun unless you're drinking. Looking back, I can't believe I agreed to race one of these more than once. More important than that, I can't believe I didn't drink alcohol until 1999. Oh the years I wasted.

Those coveralls are smart!

The circles weren't tiny. Well, they didn't feel like it. :-)

It was truly fantastic though and I plan to be back next year in spite of insisting this was a one-off....

RBMM2001 might have been a scorcher....30 degree heat on the Sunday and sunburn for all.
